Title: SlideRule, Open Science and New Research Paradigms

Abstract: SlideRule is an on-demand data processing system for ICESat-2 and other Earth science datasets that enables rapid and scalable processing using Amazon Web Services (AWS). SlideRule allows researchers to work with entire archives of major along-track ICESat-2 datasets (ATL03, ATL06 and ATL08) for new and diverse science applications. This data processing system is highly configurable to enable users to be able to generate custom higher-level products tailored towards their own research goals. With SlideRule, users can specify their area of interest, select key algorithm parameters (such as the length of each along-track segment, and the photon classification strategy), and then be returned data products containing thousands to millions of derived segments within seconds to minutes. In this talk, we will discuss the ICESat-2 mission and the SlideRule project, along with the benefits and challenges of working in an open science environment. Finally, we will explore how research frameworks are changing to enable the processing of large Earth science datasets, and enable more collaborative and more equitable science.

The Department of Earth System Science acknowledges our presence on the ancestral and unceded territory of the Acjachemen and Tongva peoples, who still hold strong cultural, spiritual and physical ties to this region.
