The Hydrology & Climate Research Group in the Department of Earth System Science at UC Irvine is the research group of Prof. Jay Famiglietti. We focus on modeling and remote sensing of the terrestrial and global water cycles. Our work has implications for hydrologic and Earth system modeling, for characterizing water cycle variability across multiple scales, for understanding its interactions in the land-ocean-atmosphere-ice system, and for monitoring changes in freshwater availability in the context of global environmental change. Our group is composed of Ph.D. students, postdoctoral researchers, and occasionally, highly motivated undergraduates. Our projects range in scale and complexity from basin-scale field studies to integrated modeling and satellite studies of global hydrology.

Ph.D. Opportunities in Environmental Hydrology and Sustainability under Professor Jay Famiglietti
I am currently searching for doctoral students with a passion for, and
commitment to, preserving Earth's environment for future generations. In particular, our group is taking a lead role in accelerating the development of next-generation hydrological models for use in addressing a number of high priority issues. These include, but are not limited to, the future of water availability, adapting to changing climate, hydrology-driven food and energy security issues, sustainable water resources management and sea level rise. We are also a leading research team in GRACE applications to hydrology, including remote sensing of the terrestrial and global water cycles and groundwater depletion in the world's major aquifer systems. These include efforts at the national scale, through the Community Hydrologic Modeling Platform (CHyMP) effort, and in California and the western U.S., through our new UC Center for Hydrologic Modeling.
