We are interested in atmospheric and climate dynamics. In our work we use observations as well as a hierarchy of numerical models to study dynamical processes in the atmosphere, and climate variability.
One focus of our research centers on
tropical-extratropical as well as troposphere- stratosphere dynamical interactions through Rossby wave propagation and breaking.
We are particularly interested in examining the effects of Rossby wave breaking (RWB) on the large-scale flow fields.
Another research focus is tropical variability including the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), its stability and interaction with westerly propagating disturbances. Collaborations are ongoing with Padhraic Smyth (Information and Computer Science) and Hal Stern
(Dept of Statistics) to develop novel statistical image analysis and tracking algorithms to automatically detect and characterize the ITCZ from satellite data and use these tools to quantify tropical variability in the central to east Pacific.
A third focus of our research centers on
investigating feedback mechanisms influencing the unprecedented high-latitude trends in several climate variables over recent decades.
