Earth System Science (ESS) at the University of California, Irvine focuses on how the atmosphere, land, cryosphere and oceans interact and manifest natural and man-made variabilities and change over a human lifetime.
We envision a society that understands the impact of human activities on the Earth climate and environment, informs adaptation, mitigation, and sustainable development strategies, and educates the public and policy makers about preserving the habitability of the planet. Our faculty, graduate students, researchers, postdoctoral affiliates, project scientists, specialists and staff are committed to providing world-class education and training, and to leading groundbreaking research in key areas of climate science such as atmospheric chemistry, ocean and land biogeochemistry, physical climate dynamics, glaciers and ice sheet mass balance, water cycle, terrestrial and marine ecosystems, and impact of climate change and land use on human systems.
