Investigates why the 14C age of marine dissolved organic carbon (DOC) is thousands of years old, despite evidence that most of it is produced in the surface ocean during photosynthesis.
Studies how ocean circulation changed in the tropical and subtropical Pacific during the past millennium.
Interested in changes in Pacific Ocean circulation and climate during the past millennium; isotopic characterization, sources and cycling of carbon in dissolved and particulate marine organic matter; and origin and cycling of black carbon in the marine environment.

Expert in the marine carbon cycle, how past changes in climate affect the carbon cycle and water circulation, and how carbon cycles in the deep ocean.
