Title: Investigating the Impact of Wildfires on U.S. Air Quality Across Multiple Scales

Abstract: After several seasons with record-setting wildfires across many western states, nearly everyone has been thinking about wildfires. This seminar will begin with an overview of connections between environmental conditions and wildfires, and then we will move on to discuss the air quality impacts of western U.S. wildfires. In our discussion of air quality impacts, we will highlight new findings from the Western Wildfire Experiment for Cloud Chemistry, Aerosol Absorption and Nitrogen (WE-CAN). The WE-CAN project deployed the NCAR/NSF C-130 research aircraft in summer 2018 to sample wildfire smoke during its first day of atmospheric evolution, and there are a number of new results relevant to air quality and human health.
