Change of major (including students in the original Environmental Science major)

    • For students who have completed the ESS 60A-B-C sequence:
      • You should enroll in ESS 70B in Fall 2018 and ESS 70A in Winter 2019 even if you do not have all the prerequisites. For this year only we will waive the prerequisites –contact Jaycee Chu in ESS (jhchu@uci.edu).
      • ESS 60B and ESS 60C will count as 2 upper division electives for the new degree requirements.
      • You must complete all requirements for the new degree - see 2018-2019 UCI catalogue for details.
      • Speak with the Physical Science academic advisors to switch major.
  • I am in the Environmental Science major and do not want to switch. Is anything going to change for me?
    • For students who have not yet completed the ESS 60A-B-C sequence:
      • In place of ESS 60A-B-C you should take ESS 70A-B and an additional ESS upper division elective - speak to a Physical Sciences academic advisor to approve this.
      • You should enroll in ESS 70B in Fall 2018 and ESS 70A in Winter 2019 even if you do not have all the prerequisites. For this year only we will waive the prerequisites –contact Jaycee Chu in ESS (jhchu@uci.edu).
      • You must complete all requirements for the original Environmental Science major - see the UCI catalogue for details.
    • For students who have completed the ESS 60A-B-C sequence:
      • No – but you must complete all requirements for the existing Environmental Science major - see the UCI catalogue for details.

Double-majoring with Environmental Science and Policy

  • Can I double-major with Environmental Science and Policy?
    • Yes - you can double major with any other undergraduate degree, including Earth System Science or Urban Studies. However there may be limits on how many classes can be used to count for both degrees - see the UCI catalogue and the academic advisors of the relevant schools for additional information and to formally declare the additional major.
  • If I want to double-major with the BS in Earth System Science, which classes can overlap?
    • The following classes can be used to fulfil the requirements of BOTH majors:
      • Chem 1A-B-C-LC-LD sequence
      • Physics 3A-B-C-3LB-3LC sequence
      • ESS 116 Data Analysis
      • ESS 192 Careers in ESS.
    • All remaining classes can only be used to fulfil one major. For example, you would need to complete 7 upper division electives to complete the BS in Earth System Science and an additional 7 upper division elective to complete the BA in Environmental Science and Policy
  • If I want to double-major with the BA in Urban Studies, which classes can overlap?
    • The following classes can be used to fulfil the requirements of BOTH majors:
      • SE E8
      • SE 10
      • SE 13 or STATS 7
      • SE 195
    • Courses being applied to Urban Studies cannot also be counted as upper-division electives for the BA in Environmental Science and Policy.
  • Is there an Environmental Science and Policy minor?
    • No - currently there is no Minor in Environmental Science and Policy. Instead please see the Minor in Earth and Atmospheric Science hosted by ESS or the Minor in Urban Studies hosted by UPPP.
