Introduction
On March 22, 2004, members of the hydrology and geodesy communities convened for a GRACE Hydrology Workshop at the Beckman Center of the National Academies on the campus of the University of California, Irvine. The workshop was organized by Jay Famiglietti of the UCI Earth System Science department, and was sponsored by the NASA Terrestrial Hydrology and Solid Earth and Natural Hazards programs. The GRACE Workshop was followed on March 23rd by the fifth meeting of the NASA Surface Water Working Group [http://www.swa.com/hydrawg/], convened by Doug Alsdorf, Department of Geography, UCLA.
The workshop included four thematic sessions:
