We welcome and encourage applications from post doctoral researchers, graduate and undergraduate student from a variety of disciplines. In particular, the lab tries to bridge the ecology and evolutionary biology of ocean bacteria with a quantitative understanding of their environment. Potential applicants should contact Professor Martiny directly (amartiny at uci edu) before applying.

Prospective graduate students interested in joining the laboratory can choose to apply either through the Department of Earth System Science, Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology or the Mathematical, Computional and Systems Biology programs.

For UC Irvine undergraduates:

It is strongly encouraged to participate in a research project as part of your undergraduate studies at UC Irvine and there are many opportunities in the Martiny lab. Over the last 5 year, more than 50 undergraduate students from Biology, Earth System Science, Public Health, Computer Science, and Engineering have participated in reseach. So send us a CV, GPA, and a short description of your research interests. We accept most students in the late spring to early fall.

Microbes are the center of the focus in the Martiny lab, but members will be advised to include components related to both the environment where microbes live (in particular on a global scale) as well as their ecology, evolution and biogeochemical importance. In this way, I hope members from the lab will be able to pursue a wide variety of career options.
