 Requirements:

A UCInetID is required for each individual receiving an account on the ESMF computer; your account name on the ESMF computer will match your UCInetID. If you do not have UCInetID, information for obtaining one can be at:
http://www.nacs.uci.edu/ucinetid/

If you would like to request a UCInetID for someone who is not already affiliated with UC Irvine, please follow the instructions at:
http://ucinetid1.nacs.uci.edu/guests/

Additionally, your UCInetID information must contain a valid phone number for access to the ESMF computer; this phone number will be used to contact you with the password for your account.

Process:

Submit an account request to esmfsa@uci.edu

If you are authorized to approve account requests:

Send an e-mail request to esmfsa@uci.edu with a list of the people you are sponsoring, their UCInetIDs, and the UCI departments they are from; this request should have "ESMF account request" in the subject of the message.

The following people are empowered to approve accounts:

Domingos R. Begalli, James Famiglietti, Stephen D. Franklin, Michael L. Goulden, Gudrun Magnusdottir, Jefferson K. Moore, Michael J. Prather, Francois Williams Primeau, James T. Randerson, Susan E. Trumbore, Frank J. Wessel, Jin Yi Yu, Charles S. Zender

(This ESMF Steering Committee maintains responsibility for identifying who may authorize account requests and communicating this list to NACS).

If you do not have the authority to approve account requests:

Send an e-mail request to esmfsa@uci.edu with a "cc" to the person who has agreed to authorize your request; this request should have "ESMF account request" in the subject of the message and your UCInetID and UCI department (if any) in the body of the message.

The sponsoring person should reply to the original message with their approval or rejection of this request. The request only becomes complete once a person who is authorized to approve accounts has replied to the e-mail message with their approval.

Within two working days of receiving a completed ESMF account request, NACS will send an e-mail message to the request initiator with their account name and instructions on how to access the computer and how to change their password. The account password will be conveyed to the end-user via telephone.

NACS will maintain a record of accounts and the account sponsor; once a year, NACS will send an e-mail message to the sponsor listing all active accounts which they have approved.

In the event a ESMF account sponsor ceases their affiliation with ESMF, all accounts sponsored by that person must have a new account request submitted for them before the beginning of the next academic quarter. NACS will notify the ESMF Steering Committee and the individual account holders of the situation by e-mail.

If you are not from UCI, please check the people link to look for PI's with interests similar to yours, and determine if they are willing to sponsor an account for you.

Once your account has been created, information for logging into the ESMF Computing Cluster can be found at: Accessing the ESMF computing cluster.

HPC User accounts for projects unrelated to Earth System Modeling:

The ESMF welcomes users from all UCI departments. If your project does not involve Earth System Modeling, you may obtain an “HPC User account” by asking an ESMF Steering Committee member listed above to sponsor you. The only difference between HPC User account priveleges and regular ESMF accounts is that outreach accounts may only submit jobs to the standby queues. Standby queues commence jobs only when higher priority queues are not waiting for resources. However, once a standby queue initiates a job, it completes just as quickly as the job would on a regular queue.
