Postdoctoral Position in High-Latitude Climate Dynamics.

The Department of Earth System Science at the University of California, Irvine (UCI) seeks a postdoctoral research
associate to work on Arctic and sub-Arctic climate variability.  The project is focused on forcing and dynamical feedback
between the atmospheric circulation as expressed in terms of climate modes, especially the North Atlantic
Oscillation/Northern Annular Mode (NAO/NAM), and other components of the climate system, such as modes of ocean,
sea ice, stratospheric variability.  We will use observations and a hierarchy of models, both dynamical and statistical.
The models will range from simple linear stochastic equations to represent interactions between the different
components of the climate system, to simplified coupled global climate models.  The project includes collaboration
with a group in Statistics and collaborations are encouraged with other groups in the growing climate focus at UC Irvine.

Scientists with a strong background in large-scale atmospheric/climate dynamics and possessing excellent modeling,
computational and statistical skills are encouraged to apply. Candidates must have modeling experience and a strong
programming background (in Matlab for example).  A PhD in atmospheric or related sciences is required. The initial
appointment is for one year.  Salary is commensurate with experience and is supported by Federal grants contingent
on available funding.

Postdoctoral Scholar Opportunities in Hydrological Modeling and Remote Sensing.

The Department of Earth System Science at the University of California, Irvine seeks 2-3 postdoctoral scholars

in the following areas: 1) large-scale hydrological model development for climate applications; 2) integrated,
catchment-scale hydrological model development for fire and landslide prediction; and 3) GRACE applications to
terrestrial and global hydrology. Applicants with skills in additional areas such as data assimilation of in situ or
remote observations, or with other sensors such as microwave soil moisture or surface water altimetry, will also
be considered.   Successful candidates will also have opportunities to collaborate with members of UCI’s growing
hydrology and water resources program in Civil and Environmental Engineering, as well as with other faculty
in Earth System Science, the Center for Hydrometeorology and Remote Sensing, the Urban Water Research Center,
the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology (Calit2) and the newly formed Environment Institute.

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in hydrology, earth system science, civil engineering, or a related discipline
at the time of appointment. The initial appointment is for one year.  Position is dependent on extramural funding
and research contracts of individual PI’s.  Salary is commensurate with experience.

Please email a statement of interest, a c.v. and the names of three references to Prof. Jay Famiglietti
at jfamigli@uci.edu.
