Postdoctoral Scholar in Climate Diagnostics and Modeling.
The Department of Earth System Science has an immediate opening for a postdoctoral scholar. The project seeks to
better understand the decadal modulation of ENSO (El Nino-Southern Oscillation) intensity and its underlying
mechanism. The work involves analyzing reanalysis data, assimilation products, and coupled model simulations,
as well as performing numerical experiments with coupled atmosphere-ocean general circulation models (CGCMs).
Applicants should have a Ph.D. in atmospheric science, physical oceanography, or related discipline. Preference
will be given to individuals with prior experience working with CGCMs and with strong Matlab programming skills.
Salary is commensurate with experience. The initial appointment for this position is 1 year, with renewal contingent
on the availability of funds.

Specialist in Terrestrial Carbon Cycling
The Department of Earth System Science/W.M. Keck Carbon Cycle AMS facility has an opportunity for a research
Specialist to support research in terrestrial carbon cycling through analyses of radiocarbon and 13C in organic matter,
water and air samples. KCCAMS was established in 2002 with the goal of improving understanding of the Earth’s
carbon cycle through the use of radiocarbon as a tracer. It supports analyses of research samples from UC campuses
and a range of non-UC researchers, and educates the user community through an annual short course. We seek an
individual interested in longer-term employment with experience in laboratory geochemical analysis and student
supervision who is capable of working as part of a team in an interdisciplinary work environment. Candidates will
be expected toparticipate in research as well as oversee laboratory preparation of samples. Preference will be
given to candidates with an advanced degree (minimum of BS) and appropriate experience in radiocarbon and/or stable
isotope measurement and data interpretation. The successful candidate will be expected to master all aspects of
sample pretreatment, preparation, measurement and data interpretation of radiocarbon by accelerator mass
spectrometry, as well as to supervise and train students in the laboratory. Active participation in research
projects is encouraged, and sufficient scientific understanding of radiocarbon to offer advice to users will be required.
Salary will be commensurate with experience. Position dependent on extramural funding and the research contracts

Postdoctoral Scholar Opportunities in Hydrological Modeling and Remote Sensing.
The Department of Earth System Science at the University of California, Irvine seeks 2-3 postdoctoral scholars
in the following areas: 1) large-scale hydrological model development for climate applications; 2) integrated,
catchment-scale hydrological model development for fire and landslide prediction; and 3) GRACE applications to
terrestrial and global hydrology. Applicants with skills in additional areas such as data assimilation of in situ or
remote observations, or with other sensors such as microwave soil moisture or surface water altimetry, will also
be considered. Successful candidates will also have opportunities to collaborate with members of UCI’s growing
hydrology and water resources program in Civil and Environmental Engineering, as well as with other faculty
in Earth System Science, the Center for Hydrometeorology and Remote Sensing, the Urban Water Research Center,
the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology (Calit2) and the newly formed Environment Institute.
Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in hydrology, earth system science, civil engineering, or a related discipline
at the time of appointment. The initial appointment is for one year. Position is dependent on extramural funding

Project Scientist in Cryosphere Science and Applications
The Department of Earth System Science (ESS) has an immediate opening for a Project Scientist position with a
focus on Cryosphere Science and Applications. The project task is to process, calibrate and distribute ice velocity maps
of the Antarctic Ice Sheet to the scientific community. The project duration is five years and is funded by NASA.
The work involves combining remote sensing data from various missions and platforms, developing automated tools of
radar processing and product calibration, interface with the National Snow and Ice Data Center in Boulder, CO, present
results at annual reviews and scientific meetings, and publish scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals of the highest
caliber. Applicants must have a strong interest in cryospheric science, satellite remote sensing, computer programming
and outreach; they must display strong organizational and leadership skills; and they must be highly motivated to work on
a scientific project that will have a major impact on the scientific community and receive a high visibility. The applicant will
work with 2-3 graduate and undergraduate students, one post-doctoral researcher, and several faculty members of ESS.
Applicants with strong background in mathematics, physics and computer programming are especially desired. The
appointment is initially for 5 years but can be extended depending on extramural funding and research contracts.
Applicants must have a PhD in cryosphere science or related fields, e.g. physics, mathematics, computer science.

Interdisciplinary Postdoctoral Scholars
The Department of Earth System Science at the University of California, Irvine (UCI) seeks 2 postdoctoral research
associates to work on innovative research in studying processes of global change using multiple remote sensing
techniques. The work will focus on the pioneering use of time variable gravity from the GRACE gravity mission in
combination with other remote sensing and in situ observations to study the seasonal and long term variability of
the Earth's polar ice sheets and the Arctic water cycle. The work may include development of methods for joint
estimation of, or inversion for, different components of the water cycle.
Requirements - Applicants with a PhD and a strong interest and/or background in one or more of the following
areas are encouraged to apply: 1- Cryospheric remote sensing; 2-Hydrological remote sensing; 3- Numerical methods
and analysis of multiple data sets. Applicants with strong mathematics and/or physics skills are especially desired.

Post-doctoral Scholar in Ice Sheet Mass Balance and Numerical Modeling.
The Department of Earth System Science at the University of California, Irvine seeks a postdoctoral scholar to
participate in research on ice sheet mass balance and dynamics. The project involves the analysis of satellite
remote sensing observations of ice motion (interferometric synthetic aperture radar) in Greenland and Antarctica
and the continuing development of realistic computer models of ice sheet flow in combination with remote sensing
data. The successful candidate will work closely with Eric Rignot and Todd Dupont at UCI and Eric Larour at JPL
to analyze changes in ice dynamics in Greenland and Antarctica and couple the results with numerical solutions
using inverse control methods. The research work will involve field activities in Greenland during the first year to
collect data on short term ice dynamics and heat and salt budgets of ocean waters in the front of the glaciers.
PhD in Electrical Engineering, Glaciology, Physical Oceanography, Mathematics, Physics or related fields is required.
Experience with satellite remote sensing analysis is required. Experience with numerical modeling is desirable.
Salary is commensurate with experience.

Postdoctoral Scholar in Marine Microbial Ecology and Genomics.
The Department of Earth System Science at the University of California, Irvine seeks a postdoctoral scholar
with training in ecology, environmental microbiology and/or molecular biology. The goal of this project is to understand
how microorganisms adapt to nutrient limitation in the ocean environment. The project will involve physiological
characterization of isolated strains, molecular surveys of ocean samples and genomic/metagenomic analyses.
There will be opportunities for advising undergraduate students and to be involved in other projects in the lab
(e.g. biogeochemical modeling and new genomics techniques).
Candidates must have a Ph.D., broad training in microbiology and molecular biology and demonstrated ability
to work independently as well as interact with others as part of a team. Expertise in the cultivation of Cyanobacteria
is highly desired and experience with genomic analysis is a plus. Salary is commensurate with experience.

Post-doctoral Scholar in Ocean Biogeochemical Modeling.
The Department of Earth System Science at the University of California, Irvine seeks a postdoctoral scholar
to participate in research on ocean biogeochemical cycles. The project involves the continued development
of computationally efficient global ocean biogeochemistry models. The successful candidate will work closely
with François Primeau and Keith Moore to construct and test hypotheses regarding the role of the iron cycle,
particulate fluxes and re-mineralization profiles on the large-scale distributions of biogeochemical tracers
during past and present climates.
PhD in Oceanography or related fields required. Experience with developing and running 3D ocean general
circulation models including biogeochemical modules is desirable. Position is dependent on extramural funding
