New Jobs - Academic Opportunities - How to Apply

Postdoctoral Scholar in Tropical Atmospheric Dynamics.

The Department of Earth System Science at the University of California, Irvine (UCI) seeks a postdoctoral research associate to work on innovative research in tropical atmospheric dynamics, with close collaboration with groups in Computer Science (Center for Machine Learning and Intelligent Systems) and Statistics at UCI. The successful candidate will work on topics relevant to tracking of tropical disturbances and variability in the ITCZ. The research will focus on relating tracks (including genesis and lysis), ITCZ activity and intensity of disturbances to the atmosphere/ocean state.

Scientists with a strong background in tropical meteorology, large-scale atmospheric dynamics and possessing excellent computational and statistical skills are encouraged to apply. A PhD in atmospheric or related sciences is required. The initial appointment is for one year. Position is dependent on extramural funding and research contracts of individual PI's. Salary is commensurate with experience.

Please send a CV with the names of three references to

Post-doctoral Scholar in Ice Sheet Mass Balance and Numerical Modeling.

The Department of Earth System Science at the University of California, Irvine seeks a postdoctoral scholar to participate in research on ice sheet mass balance and dynamics. The project involves the analysis of satellite remote sensing observations of ice motion (interferometric synthetic aperture radar) in Greenland and Antarctica and the continuing development of realistic computer models of ice sheet flow in combination with remote sensing data. The successful candidate will work closely with Eric Rignot and Todd Dupont at UCI and Eric Larour at JPL to analyze changes in ice dynamics in Greenland and Antarctica and couple the results with numerical solutions using inverse control methods. The research work will involve field activities in Greenland during the first year to collect data on short term ice dynamics and heat and salt budgets of ocean waters in the front of the glaciers.

PhD in Electrical Engineering, Glaciology, Physical Oceanography, Mathematics, Physics or related fields is required. Experience with satellite remote sensing analysis is required. Experience with numerical modeling is desirable. Salary is commensurate with experience.

Send applications including CV, a statement of research interests and a list of three references to:

Post-doctoral Scholar in Ocean Biogeochemical Modeling.

The Department of Earth System Science at the University of California, Irvine seeks a postdoctoral scholar to participate in research on ocean biogeochemical cycles. The project involves the continued development of computationally efficient global ocean biogeochemistry models. The successful candidate will work closely with François Primeau and Keith Moore to construct and test hypotheses regarding the role of the iron cycle, particulate fluxes and re-mineralization profiles on the large-scale distributions of biogeochemical tracers during past and present climates. PhD in Oceanography or related fields required. Experience with developing and running 3D ocean general circulation models including biogeochemical modules is desirable. Position is dependent on extramural funding and research contracts of individual PI's. Salary is commensurate with experience.

Postdoctoral Scholar in Marine Microbial Ecology and Genomics.

The Department of Earth System Science at the University of California, Irvine seeks a postdoctoral scholar with training in ecology, environmental microbiology and/or molecular biology. The goal of this project is to understand how microorganisms adapt to nutrient limitation in the ocean environment. The project will involve physiological characterization of isolated strains, molecular surveys of ocean samples and genomic/metagenomic analyses. There will be opportunities for advising undergraduate students and to be involved in other projects in the lab (e.g. biogeochemical modeling and new genomics techniques).

Candidates must have a Ph.D., broad training in microbiology and molecular biology and demonstrated ability to work independently as well as interact with others as part of a team. Expertise in the cultivation of Cyanobacteria is highly desired and experience with genomic analysis is a plus. Salary is commensurate with experience.

How to Apply:
A curriculum vitae including the names and contact information for three references should be sent to Adam Martiny, Dept of Earth System Science, U.C. Irvine, Irvine, CA 92697-3100; email amartiny@uci.edu.

The Department of Earth System Science anticipates opening for postdocs interested in global-scale Cryospheric modeling studies.

Our NASA-funded IPY project "Black Carbon Impacts on Cryospheric Climate Sensitivity and Surface Hydrology" (http://www.ess.uci.edu/~zender#prp_ipy) will examine aerosol interactions with polar climate.

Our objectives are to
1. Quantify how timing and location of BC emissions affect Arctic surface reflectance and atmospheric processes.
2. Identify the relative roles of surface and atmospheric BC forcing on Arctic climate sensitivity (including sea-ice response).
3. Quantify how BC alters seasonality of Arctic surface freshwater reservoirs and fluxes such as snowpack depth and extent, depth to permafrost, soil moisture, and runoff. Observational data for process evaluation will come from AMSR-E, CERES, GRACE, MISR, and MODIS satellites and from IPY field programs including POLARCAT.

This project is collaborative among the groups of Professors
Charlie Zender (Aerosols, Radiation, http://www.ess.uci.edu/~zender),
Jay Famiglietti (Hydrology, http://www.ess.uci.edu/~famiglietti), and
Jim Randerson (Fire, C, H2O, http://www.ess.uci.edu/~jranders).
Participants will work directly with one or more of these groups.
Collaborations with other groups will be encouraged and supported.
These include UCI (Dupont, Rignot, Velicogna), LANL (Hunke, Lipscomb),
LGGE (Domine), NCAR (Flanner, Rasch), and NSIDC (Khalsa).

Applicant must have strong interest and/or background in one or more of three areas 1. Aerosol physics, 2. Snow/sea-ice/glaciers physics; 3. Arctic freshwater hydrology. Global studies will be conducted using modified versions of NCAR's Community Climate System Model.
Opportunistic microphysical and mesoscale studies that explore POLARCAT IPY data are also likely.

Applicants please e-mail a detailed CV, statement of research interests, and contact information for up to three references before 3 September 2007 to Dr. Charlie Zender, zender@uci.edu or mail to 3200 Croul Hall, Irvine, CA 92697.
