Link Foundation OEI Ph.D. Fellowship Program

In brief, the Link Foundation is offering $26,000, 1-year Ph.D. fellowships
to support research related to all areas of ocean engineering and ocean
instrumentation (which includes the development of instrumentation to
support oceanographic research). The fellowships are tenable at any
university in the US and Canada and do not have any restrictions on

American Museum of Natural History urban teaching fellowship

The Master of Arts in Teaching Program at AMNH is the first urban teacher residency program offered by a museum. STAR Graduate Environmental Fellowships (EPA)

The Environmental Protection Agency is inviting graduate fellowship applications for research in 19 areas. The program does not support projects performing human subjects research.

  1. Students must attend a fully accredited U.S. college or university (located in the U.S. or its territories) for their graduate studies.
  2. Applicants must also be citizens of the U.S. or its territories or possessions, or be lawfully admitted to the U.S. for permanent residence. Resident aliens must include their green card number in their application (you must have your green card at the time of application to be eligible for this Fellowship opportunity). EPA may verify this number with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service of the Department of Homeland Security.
Funding Provided: 

Approximately 80 fellowships of $42,000 annually for two years (Master's) or three years (Ph.D.), usable over a period of five years.

Anticipated Type of Award: Fellowship
Estimated Number of Awards: Approximately 80 awards. The EPA expects to make approximately ten percent of these awards (8) to high ranking applicants from Minority Academic Institutions (MAIs), as defined in Section I.A, who pass the peer review process described in Section V and successfully complete the award process.
Anticipated Funding Amount: Approximately $3.4 million for all awards

Potential Funding per Fellowship: $42,000 per year per fellowship. Master's level students may receive support for a maximum of two years for a total of up to $84,000. Doctoral students may be supported for a maximum of three years for a total of up to $126,000, usable over a period of five years. Cost sharing is not required.  Eligible applicants as defined in Section III below, including those attending institutions with significant minority enrollment, are particularly encouraged to apply.  Examples of such institutions include Accredited Postsecondary Minority Serving Institutions as defined in 20 U.S.C. Sec. 1061; 20 U.S.C. Secs. 1059(c) and 1059g(a)(2); and 20 U.S.C. Sec. 1101a(a)(5). 

If recommended to receive a fellowship, you should be contacted no later than May 1, 2013 and should subsequently receive your official notification of award by late summer 2013, for the fall term. Please note that this schedule may be changed without notification due to factors that were not anticipated at the time of announcement. The earliest anticipated start date for these awards is September 1, 2013.

Chancellor’s Club Fund for Excellence Fellowship

The Graduate Division is pleased to announce the AY 2012-2013 competition for the Chancellor’s Club Fund for Excellence Fellowships. All schools are eligible to nominate two students to compete for six fellowships. The Chancellor’s Club Fellowships are intended to recognize our most academically superior doctoral students — those who exhibit outstanding promise as scholars, researchers and public leaders.

All schools are eligible to nominate two students to compete for six fellowships, each in the amount of $10,000.

Nominees must meet the following minimum criteria:
1.    Plan to complete their Ph.D. degree by the end of fall quarter 2013

2.    Have a minimum graduate-level UCI GPA of 3.7

3.    Be advanced to candidacy for the Ph.D. degree

4.    Show financial need (provide a statement)
5.    Be willing to present their dissertation research at a Chancellor’s Club dinner or other function
6.    Exhibit excellent interpersonal and leadership abilities
Stipulations:
Students receiving this award are required to file their dissertation by the end of fall quarter 2013. This must be explicitly stated in the letter of nomination. Award funds will be returned by the school to Graduate Division if the student does not meet this requirement. Doc 2A students (students who are more than nine quarters of enrollment beyond advancement) are ineligible.

 

Funding Provided: 

It is expected that each recipient of the fellowship will be awarded a six-month stipend to total $10,000 for the period of January 2013 through June 2013. Receipt of the full amount of the award is contingent upon the student’s continued satisfactory academic progress and success during this period.

Application Method: 

Your school is asked to collect nominations from each department and then to forward the two most promising nominees, based on merit and student need. In addition to the student’s academic record and letters of recommendations, other factors to be considered by the selection committee will include an evaluation of the student’s degree progress since matriculation into the program, leadership ability and financial need.

The La Verne Noyes Fellowship

The La Verne Noyes Fellowship is intended to provide support to academically superior students in financial need, who are US citizens, pursuing a master's degree (except MBA) or Ph.D. and direct descendants of a World War I US Navy or Army veteran. Preference will be given to those students who have not previously received this award. Students must be enrolled full time (in a minimum of 12 units) in the academic quarter in which the student chooses to take the award. This award cannot be deferred to a subsequent academic year.

To be eligible for the La Verne Noyes Fellowship, the applicant must be a United States citizen pursuing a master's degree (except MBA) or Ph.D., be in good academic standing and be the direct descendant of a World War I US Navy or Army veteran and have financial need (based on a filed FAFSA).

Students from any academic unit who meet the criteria may apply. To be considered, all individual student applications must include the following:

  • Documentation proving predecessor's World War I service - between the dates of April 6, 1917 and November 11, 1917
  • A completed La Verne Noyes Fellowship Application Form
  • The student's Curriculum Vitae
  • A cover letter confirming U.S. citizenship and specifying the student's relationship to the veteran

James J. Harvey Dissertation Quarter Fellowship

The James J. Harvey Dissertation Quarter Fellowship is intended to provide a doctoral student with financial support while working to complete a publishable dissertation. The student must be in good academic standing and doing research related to homosexuality or on the works or life of James J. Harvey. The student must also have financial need. Qualifications: 

Applicants should be a doctoral student beginning his/her final work on their dissertation. The graduate student must be within one year of completing his/her dissertation and would be expected to file it within 12 months of beginning their fellowship tenure. The applicant must have advanced to candidacy for the Ph.D. Successful completion of the Ph.D. degree is expected to occur no later than one quarter after the end of the student’s dissertation fellowship tenure. These criteria must be met for a nomination to succeed. In addition to the recommendations made by the student's Dissertation Committee Chair, Department Chair and Associate Dean, other factors to be considered in the Graduate Dean's award decision will include an evaluation of the student's academic record, degree progress (including the time since matriculation into the program), and plan for completion of all degree requirements.

The Public Impact Fellowships highlight and support doctoral students whose current research has the potential for substantial impact in the public sphere. For UC Irvine Public Impact Fellowships, nominees must, at minimum, meet the following criteria:

1.    Maintain UCI GPA of 3.7 or higher through spring quarter 2012.

2.    Be a current, full-time doctoral student who has advanced to candidacy.

3.    Conduct research that has critical public impact. (Examples of relevant research include studies
that aim to improve economic opportunity and well-being, health care, social justice, political
participation, cultural engagement, and scientific or technical solutions to pressing social issues.)

4.    Be willing to have research spotlighted/featured on both the Graduate Division and UCI websites,
brochures and social networks, and be able and available to effectively communicate and discuss their research in lay terms with prospective donors, legislators and/or their staff, and the media during Winter and Spring quarters.

5.    If selected as a finalist, student must be available to give a five-minute presentation to the selection committee, followed by a brief interview, on Tuesday, November 27, 2012 between 9:30 am - 12:30 pm.

For the UCI/Stanley Behrens Public Impact Fellowship, additional criteria apply as follows:

1.    Be a U.S. Citizen

2.    Have financial need

3.    Students must be conducting cutting-edge research in areas that may include: Stem cell
research; energy research; water sustainability/conservation; research in endothelial cells for plant- based nutrition; diabetes treatment; bipolar disorder; schizophrenia; multiple myeloma; multiple sclerosis; the effects of physical and sexual abuse on children; and in the areas of the law and humanities.
4.    In addition to being available for a presentation and interview Tuesday, November 27, 2012
between 9:30 am - 12:30 pm, finalists may also be required to attend a brief interview with
the donor(s) at a time to be determined.
5.    Must be willing to be interviewed and/or meet with the donor(s) and provide the donor(s) with periodic, perhaps quarterly, updates.

Funding Provided: 

Graduate Division Public Impact Fellowships: $10,000 (full award) or $1,000 (honorable mention award) to be used as a stipend.
All schools are eligible to nominate students to compete for a total of 13 fellowships. Each of the three full awardees will receive $10,000. Ten honorable mention awardees each will receive $1,000. Students may choose to accept the award during winter or spring 2013, or over both quarters, at their discretion.

UCI/Stanley Behrens Public Impact Fellowship: $20,000 (full award) to be used as a stipend.
All schools are eligible to nominate students to compete for 2 donor funded $10,000 awards matched by the Graduate Division, for a total award amount of $20,000 each. Stipends will be awarded during winter and spring 2013.

Students who receive the full $10,000/$20,000 awards are not to be appointed as TAs during the period of the fellowship but may be appointed as GSRs. In such cases, students are encouraged to consult with the UCI Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships.
Previous winners (full awardees and honorable mentions) and current ARCS scholars are not eligible for this year’s competition.
