NASA Announcement of Flight Opportunities--Applications Due 12/21/12

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Dryden Flight Research Center has released a solicitation entitled "NASA Announcement of Flight Opportunities (AFO) for Payloads Maturing Crosscutting Technologies that Advance Multiple Future Space Missions to Flight Readiness Status." The current solicitation cycle, AFO #6, provides access to flights on parabolic flights, suborbital Reusable Launch Vehicles (sRLV), and high-altitude balloons.

All applications must be submitted electronically through NSPIRES by an authorized organizational representative (AOR). Potential applicants and proposing organizations are urged to access the electronic proposal system well in advance of the application due date to familiarize themselves with its structure and to enter the requested information. Note that it may require several weeks for non-U.S. organizations to obtain the registrations needed to submit a proposal.

Comments and questions may be sent via e-mail to peer-review-afo@nasaprs.com. Responses to inquiries will be answered by e-mail and may also be included in the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document located on the NSPIRES page associated with the solicitation; anonymity of persons/institutions who submit questions will be preserved.

Southern California Academy of Sciences (SCAS) Grant Program

The Board of Directors of the Southern California Academy of Sciences is pleased to announce its annual SCAS Student Research Grant. Students presently in an Undergraduate, Masters or Doctoral program may apply by completing the grant application. Proposals will be considered in any field of science with an emphasis on the southern California area. Research will be funded for a period of one year. Recipients of the awards will be expected to present their research at the upcoming 2012 Annual Meeting.

An interdisciplinary committee will select 30 Symposium Scholars based on academic record, commitment to interdisciplinary research, and leadership potential. U.S. residents and international scholars seeking to connect with U.S. researchers are encouraged to apply.
Travel and on-site expenses will be covered in most cases.

Application Method: 
To apply for the Symposium, you will need to submit the following:
  1. Dissertation Abstract - Submit by registering your Ph.D. dissertation abstract at: http://disccrs.org/register
  2. 2-page Résumé (Biographical Sketch)
  3. Two essays detailing your completed and ongoing research (1 page total length)
  4. Two letters of recommendation
