Variability was observed on El Nino timescales (3-7 years) as well as at decadal and multi-decadal periods. Low radiocarbon levels persisted for ten years during the early 1600s and for sixteen years during the early 1800s, both coincident with periods of high volcanic aerosol loading in the atmosphere from massive eruptions. Intensification of tropical circulation at this time may be linked to climatically-controlled changes in the structure of the tropical thermocline that is responsible for delivering cool, upwelled waters to the tropical east Pacific.&lt;/p&gt;</style>
<work-type><style face="normal" font="default" size="100%">Article</style></work-type><accession-num><style face="normal" font="default" size="100%">ISI:000246306200001</style></accession-num><notes><style face="normal" font="default" size="100%">&lt;p&gt;ISI Document Delivery No.: 165LETimes Cited: 2Cited Reference Count: 31Cited References: ADAMS JB, 2003, NATURE, V426, P274, DOI 10.1038/nature02101 BJERKNES J, 1969, MONTHLY WEATHER REV, V97, P163 BRADLEY RS, 1988, CLIMATIC CHANGE, V12, P221 BROWN TA, 1993, RADIOCARBON, V35, P245 COBB KM, 2003, NATURE, V424, P271, DOI 10.1038/nature01779 CROWLEY TJ, 1997, PALEOCEANOGRAPHY, V12, P633 CROWLEY TJ, 2000, SCIENCE, V289, P270 DRUFFEL EM, 1981, GEOPHYS RES LETT, V8, P59 DRUFFEL ERM, 1987, J MAR RES, V45, P667 DRUFFEL ERM, 2004, RADIOCARBON, V46, P627 DUNBAR RB, 1994, PALEOCEANOGRAPHY, V9, P291 GU DF, 1995, J CLIMATE, V8, P864 GUILDERSON TP, 1998, SCIENCE, V281, P240 HURRELL JW, 1994, TELLUS A, V46, P325 LAMY F, 2001, EARTH PLANET SC LETT, V185, P369 LAMY F, 2002, PALEOCEANOGRAPHY, V17, ARTN 1028 MANTUA NJ, 1997, B AM METEOROL SOC, V78, P1069 NOZAKI Y, 1978, GEOPHYS RES LETT, V5, P825 OESCHGER H, 1975, TELLUS, V27, P168 RINTOUL SR, 2002, J PHYS OCEANOGR, V32, P1308 ROBERTSON A, 2001, J GEOPHYS RES-ATMOS, V106, P14783 RODGERS KB, 2003, GEOPHYS RES LETT, V30, ARTN 1084 RODGERS KB, 2004, GEOPHYS RES LETT, V31, ARTN L14314 SHINDELL DT, 2004, GEOPHYS RES LETT, V31, ARTN L18209 SOUTHON J, 2004, RADIOCARBON, V46, P41 STUIVER M, 1981, EARTH PLANET SC LETT, V53, P349 STUIVER M, 1986, RADIOCARBON, V28, P980 TOGGWEILER JR, 1991, J GEOPHYS RES-OCEANS, V96, P20467 TORRENCE C, 1998, B AM METEOROL SOC, V79, P61 WELLINGTON GM, 1996, PALEOCEANOGRAPHY, V11, P467 YIN JH, 2005, GEOPHYS RES LETT, V32, ARTN L18701Druffel, Ellen R.
