Research Opportunities for Undergraduates

Download Research Application here

The Department of Earth System Science offers many opportunities to undergraduates to engage in research. By reading more about faculty members and their research groups a student can better gear what area he or she is most interested in.

The Department offers two research classes: ESS 199 and H199.

Be sure to fill out the Research Application, have your faculty advisor sign the form, and return it to the front desk in Croul Hall 3200 to enroll.

Steps for conducting research:

  1. Do some research yourself! Explore various areas of study and have a better understanding of what type of research you are most interested in.

  2. Talk to professors. They are the best ones to give you more information about their own research and how you can contribute.

  3. Enroll in ESS 191 (when available) to find out more about research opportunities in the department.

  4. Once you’ve decided what you’d like to do, approach faculty members about working with them.

  5. Fill out the Research Application and enroll in ESS 199 or ESS H199.

UCI students have another resource for help with research called the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP Check out their website for events, calls for proposals, and other ways to make your research take shape.
